The Black Buoy Public House Wivenhoe
Real Ale at the Black Buoy

Welcome to the Black Buoy, a 300-year-old inn located in Wivenhoe, Essex close to the River Colne. The pub was purchased by a local consortium in 2013, completely restored and re-opened as a Free House. Behind its quaint brick frontage you will find a warm welcome and characterful setting, with roaring fires, beamed ceilings, wooden floors and echoes of the pub’s nautical history.

Our kitchen is open seven days a week. From Monday to Saturday the lunch menu is available from 12pm to 3pm and the evening menu is available from 6pm to 9pm. On Sundays, roasts are served from 12pm to 5pm.

2015 Pub of the Year!

The Black Buoy has been named 2015 Colchester and NE Essex CAMRA Rural Pub of the Year.

Additionally, following a successful first year's trading, we are also delighted to now be officially referenced in the national publication The Good Pub Guide.

Huge thanks to our staff, shareholders and many loyal customers who helped us to achieve this recognition

As a freehold pub, we offer a regularly changing range of bespoke real ales, craft beer and bottled beers. We serve excellent British pub food which is all home-cooked by our chef and his team. The wine list contains fascinating choices from near and far, with something to suit all palates. High-quality fresh coffee and a good range of soft drinks are available too.

The Captains’ Room, seating up to ten people, can be booked for private dining and for business meetings. Outside there is a beautiful terraced garden for eating and drinking. The garden is separated by a gate from our car park. We welcome cyclists – there are bike racks and undercover bike storage can be arranged for overnight visitors. Well-behaved children and dogs are welcome at the pub. For anyone who needs to get online, there’s free WiFi access too.
